Yuri Gagarin – The First Space Explorer

Yuri Gagarin and Vostok 1

In only a few short months the world will see the 50th Anniversary of the first human spaceflight. April 12th 1961-2011.

Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, making a 108-minute orbital flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft.

The Soviet Union was quite rightly proud of this fantastic achievement again beating the United States to the post, as they often did in the early days of the space race. It was not to last however. History shows that the initial slow start of the Americans quickly led to that giant leap for mankind in July of 1969.

A Yuri Gagarin commemorative patch is available from the Spaceboosters store.
